The calculator first estimates total duty, then divides it equally across the shipment count.
Customs Duty Per-Shipment Cost Estimator
The Customs Duty Per-Shipment Cost Estimator calculates average customs duty cost per shipment from a declared value, a user-entered duty rate, and the number of shipments sharing that value. Import planners can use it to compare shipment-splitting scenarios or estimate how a batch-level duty amount spreads across inbound shipments.
The model uses a simple ad valorem duty calculation. It does not determine the correct tariff rate or customs value, and it excludes other landed-cost items unless they are independently added outside this calculator.
Duty allocation
Formula:
Duty per shipment = Customs value × (Duty rate ÷ 100) ÷ Number of shipmentsWhere:
- Customs value — declared value base used for the duty calculation
- Duty rate — user-entered ad valorem duty percentage
- Number of shipments — shipments across which the modeled duty is allocated
Assumptions: The allocation is equal by shipment count and assumes one rate on the full entered value. Actual customs treatment can differ by line item, origin, valuation rule, exemptions, additional duties, or other charges.
What the result means
Under an equal allocation, each of the five shipments carries $912 of the modeled customs duty.
This result is an operational estimate based only on the values entered. Apply the same definitions and units when comparing scenarios.
Given:
- Total customs value = $95,000
- Duty rate = 4.8%
- Number of shipments = 5
Calculation:
Total duty = $95,000 × 0.048 = $4,560
Duty per shipment = $4,560 ÷ 5 = $912
Result: $912.00 per shipment
Under an equal allocation, each of the five shipments carries $912 of the modeled customs duty.
Does splitting a shipment always reduce duty?
Not in this simple model. With the same total customs value and rate, total modeled duty is unchanged; only the average amount allocated to each shipment changes.
Should freight be included in customs value?
Use the customs value basis required for your actual import context. Valuation rules vary, so this calculator does not decide which cost elements belong in customs value.
Can different tariff rates be combined here?
A single blended rate can support rough planning, but separate calculations by product line are more transparent when rates differ materially.
Are brokerage and customs fees included?
No. The result is customs duty only. Brokerage, handling, taxes, and other border charges should be modeled separately.
How is this different from Customs Duty Capacity Estimator?
This page starts with customs value and estimates duty per shipment. The capacity estimator starts with a duty budget and solves for the customs value that budget could support at a given rate.
