Digital Product Fee Estimator

This estimator totals common transaction fees for digital product sales using units sold, average price, percentage-based platform and payment charges, and a fixed processor fee per transaction. It helps creators compare storefronts, payment stacks, or pricing plans before committing to a channel.

The output shows total fees, net receipts after fees, and the effective fee rate. It does not include refunds, taxes, advertising, content production, or ongoing support unless those amounts are embedded in the fee inputs, so it should be used as one component of a broader profit analysis.

Result
Estimated total transaction fees
Gross sales
Net receipts after fees
Effective fee rate

1. Enter paid transaction count
Use the number of completed charges, because fixed processor fees apply per transaction.

2. Enter average transaction value
Use the average amount charged before transaction fees.

3. Add the platform percentage
Enter the storefront or marketplace share of revenue.

4. Add processor pricing
Enter both the percentage rate and fixed amount charged for each payment.

5. Compare total and effective fees
The effective rate is especially useful when comparing low-price and high-price products.

6. Run alternate price scenarios
Keeping volume constant shows how fixed fees weigh more heavily on cheaper products.

Core formula:

Total Fees = Gross Sales × (Platform Rate + Processor Rate) + Transactions × Fixed Fee

Variables

  • Gross Sales: paid transactions × average transaction value
  • Platform Rate: percentage charged by the selling platform
  • Processor Rate: percentage charged by the payment processor
  • Transactions: number of separate payment events
  • Fixed Fee: flat processor charge per transaction

Assumptions: The model assumes one payment per transaction and applies both percentage rates to the full transaction value.

What the result means

Estimated total transaction fees is calculated from the values entered above and updates automatically.

Use the result as an estimate and keep definitions consistent when comparing periods or scenarios.

Given: 400 transactions averaging $24, a 5% platform fee, a 2.9% processor fee, and a $0.30 fixed fee.

Calculation: Gross sales = 400 × $24 = $9,600. Percentage fees = $9,600 × 7.9% = $758.40. Fixed fees = 400 × $0.30 = $120.

Result: Total estimated fees are $878.40, leaving $8,721.60 before other costs.

Why is the effective rate higher on inexpensive products?

The fixed fee is divided across a smaller transaction value, so it represents a larger share of each low-priced sale.

Should sales tax be included in transaction value?

Use the amount on which your provider actually assesses fees. Some providers charge fees on tax and shipping, while others may differ.

Does the calculator include chargeback fees?

No. Add chargebacks separately because they are usually event-based and may include both lost revenue and a penalty fee.

Can I compare two storefronts?

Yes. Run the same sales volume and price through each fee schedule, then compare total fees and net receipts.

What is excluded from net receipts?

Net receipts here subtract only the entered transaction fees. Refunds, cost of goods, advertising, income tax, and other operating expenses are not included.
