Domestic Budget Planner

The Domestic Budget Planner estimates the total cost of a trip within your home country by combining transportation, lodging, meals, activities, and other expected expenses. It is useful for weekend trips, family visits, road trips, and multi-city vacations where several cost categories need to be viewed together.

The result shows both the full trip budget and the average cost per traveler and per day. Use the estimate to set a savings target, compare two trip plans, or identify the category that contributes most to the total. The planner is an estimate, so keeping a small contingency outside the listed categories can help cover price changes or unplanned purchases.

What the result means

The main result is the combined amount planned for the entire trip. The supporting figures normalize that amount by traveler and day so different trip options can be compared on the same basis.

All inputs should use the same currency. The calculator does not add a contingency automatically.

Given: Transportation $450, lodging $720, meals $360, activities $240, other costs $150, 2 travelers, and 4 days.

Calculation: Total = 450 + 720 + 360 + 240 + 150 = $1,920. Per traveler = 1,920 ÷ 2 = $960. Per traveler per day = 1,920 ÷ (2 × 4) = $240.

Result: The estimated trip budget is $1,920, or $240 per traveler per day.

Should I enter costs per person or for the whole group?

Enter whole-trip totals for each category. The calculator divides the combined amount by the number of travelers.

Does the planner include emergency money?

No. Add a contingency amount in Other costs if you want it included in the displayed total.

How should I handle a free lodging night?

Enter only the nights you expect to pay for. Any free or prepaid portion can be left out.

Can I compare trips of different lengths?

Yes. The cost-per-day and cost-per-traveler-per-day results make different durations easier to compare.

Are shared and personal expenses treated differently?

The calculator combines them. For better accuracy, total all shared expenses and all expected personal expenses before entering them.
