Group Trip Split Calculator

The Group Trip Split Calculator determines each traveler’s share of common trip expenses and compares it with what that traveler has already paid. It supports an equal split or a weighted share for one person, which can be useful when a traveler occupies more space, joins for a different portion, or has an agreed allocation.

The result shows the target share, current payment, and balance for the selected traveler. A positive amount means that person still owes money; a negative amount means they should receive reimbursement from the group.

1. Add shared expenses
Include only costs the group agreed to divide, such as lodging, rental vehicles, groceries, or joint tickets.

2. Enter the traveler count
Count everyone participating in this expense pool.

3. Choose the selected traveler’s weight
Use 1 for an equal share or another value for an agreed proportional allocation.

4. Set the others’ weight
This value applies equally to every traveler except the selected person.

5. Enter what the selected traveler paid
Use their payments toward the shared pool, not personal purchases.

6. Read the settlement
The tool reports whether the selected traveler owes the group or should be reimbursed.

Total weight units = Selected weight + (Travelers − 1) × Other weight Selected traveler share = Total expenses × Selected weight ÷ Total weight units Balance = Selected traveler share − Amount already paid

A positive balance is still owed by the selected traveler. A negative balance means the group owes that traveler the absolute value of the balance.

What the result means

The large amount is the selected traveler’s outstanding settlement, with the label indicating whether it is owed or receivable.

This tool calculates one traveler at a time and does not generate a full payment network among all participants.

Given: $2,400 shared expenses, six travelers, equal weights of 1, and $300 already paid by the selected traveler.

Calculation: Total units = 1 + (6 − 1) × 1 = 6. Target share = 2,400 × 1 ÷ 6 = $400. Balance = 400 − 300 = $100.

Result: The selected traveler still owes $100.

What does a weight of 2 mean?

It gives the selected traveler twice the allocation of someone with a weight of 1.

Can every traveler have a different weight?

Not in one calculation. This version compares one selected weight with one common weight for everyone else.

Should personal purchases be included?

No. Add only expenses that the group agreed to share.

What if the traveler paid more than their share?

The result changes to an amount to receive, showing the reimbursement due.

Why show an equal-split reference?

It lets you compare the weighted result with a simple total divided by traveler count.
