Domestic Meal Calculator

The Domestic Meal Calculator estimates food spending for a trip by combining daily breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack, and beverage allowances. The daily amount is multiplied by the number of travelers and travel days, with an optional tip or service percentage.

This tool is useful for road trips, family vacations, conferences, and visits where food is not included in lodging or event fees. The result provides a group total and a daily per-person allowance. Actual spending will vary by destination, dining style, included meals, and whether groceries replace restaurant meals.

What the result means

The result is the planned food spending for all travelers over the entered meal days.

If some meals are included with lodging or an event, enter 0 for that meal or reduce the number of meal days.

Given: $12 breakfast, $18 lunch, $32 dinner, $10 extras, 2 travelers, 4 days, and 15% for tips.

Calculation: Daily per person = 12 + 18 + 32 + 10 = $72. Base = 72 × 2 × 4 = $576. Tips = 576 × 0.15 = $86.40. Total = $662.40.

Result: Estimated meal budget is $662.40.

What if breakfast is included at the hotel?

Enter 0 for breakfast on days when it is included, or use an average breakfast allowance across the trip.

Should tax be included in each meal amount?

Ideally, use amounts that already reflect expected menu price and sales tax. The percentage field is intended for tips or service charges.

How can I budget for groceries and restaurants together?

Use the daily meal fields as blended averages that combine both types of spending.

Does the calculator account for children eating less?

Not separately. Enter lower blended per-person amounts when the group includes children.

How do I handle a special expensive dinner?

Add its extra cost to the Snacks and drinks field as a daily average, or include it in the Other costs of a trip budget.
