Given:

Calculation:
Allowance volume = 1,000 × 0.05 = 50 cu yd
Total quantity = 1,000 + 50 = 1,050 cu yd

Result: 1,050 cu yd

A 5% allowance adds 50 cubic yards to the base quantity. The total planning quantity becomes 1,050 cubic yards on the same measurement basis as the input.

What should the waste allowance cover?

Use it for project-specific quantity uncertainty or expected losses that are not already included elsewhere in the takeoff. Define the purpose of the percentage in your estimate notes.

Can I use this allowance for swell or shrinkage?

It is better to model known swell or shrinkage separately when possible because those changes have a specific physical basis. Otherwise you risk mixing different assumptions in one percentage.

Yes mathematically, as long as the required volume and the resulting total are interpreted on the same basis.

What if I already added a contingency to the earthwork quantity?
