eBay Return Calculator

The eBay Return Calculator measures return rate and estimates the financial impact of returned orders. The model uses average per-return costs. It does not reduce the result for restocking fees or recovered resale value unless you enter net amounts after those recoveries.

What the result means

The main result is the percentage of completed orders that were returned.

Return timing can cross reporting periods; use a consistent cohort or lag-adjusted method for cleaner comparisons.

Given: There are 500 completed orders and 24 returns. Average costs per return are $4.50 outbound shipping, $6.25 return shipping, $2 processing, $3 lost value, and $0.75 fee loss.

Calculation: Return rate = 24 ÷ 500 × 100 = 4.80%. Cost per return = $4.50 + $6.25 + $2 + $3 + $0.75 = $16.50. Total cost = $16.50 × 24 = $396.

Result: Return rate is 4.80%, and estimated total return cost is $396.00.

Should partial returns count as returned orders?

Choose a rule that matches your reporting goal. For order-level return rate, count an order once even when only part of it is returned.

How do I handle items that can be resold?

Enter only the expected net value loss after considering resale proceeds and refurbishment cost.

Are refunded item prices included in return cost?

Not automatically. A refund reverses revenue, while this model focuses on incremental costs and value loss caused by the return.

Why compare cost per order as well as cost per return?

Cost per order spreads total return expense across the full order base, making it easier to incorporate into pricing and margin analysis.

How is this different from a refund calculator?

A return calculator focuses on return frequency and operational cost. A refund calculator focuses on money returned to buyers and the net financial reversal.
