Operators can use the result to spot underused equipment, approaching capacity constraints, or the need to change access hours. Utilization alone does not measure queueing, reliability, energy throughput, or whether demand is concentrated into a short peak window, so those metrics should be reviewed alongside it.

1. Choose a reporting period
Use one consistent period for sessions, operating days, and available hours.

Count sessions that occupied a charging port during the period.

Use plug-in time rather than only active energy-transfer time when measuring physical occupancy.

Occupied port-hours = Number of sessions × Average session duration

Available port-hours = Charging ports × Available hours per day × Days

Utilization (%) = Occupied port-hours ÷ Available port-hours × 100

The model assumes every session occupies one port and uses average duration. A result above 100% indicates inconsistent inputs, overlapping capacity definitions, or that the stated availability is too low.

What the result means

The percentage is average port occupancy relative to the stated time capacity.

Examine peak demand and downtime separately because an average can hide short periods of congestion.

Given: 40 sessions averaging 3.2 hours, 8 ports, 12 available hours per day, and 30 days.

Calculation: Occupied hours = 40 × 3.2. Available hours = 8 × 12 × 30. Utilization = occupied ÷ available × 100.

Result: The percentage shows average time-based occupancy across all listed charging ports during the period.

What counts as a charging session?

Count each distinct period in which one vehicle occupies one charging port. Use a consistent rule for interrupted or reconnected sessions.

Should duration include time after charging is complete?

Include it when the vehicle continues to block the port and the goal is space occupancy. Exclude it only when measuring active charging equipment use.

Can low utilization still coincide with queues?

Yes. Average utilization can be low while demand is concentrated into a few hours. Review hourly peaks and wait times before deciding capacity is sufficient.

How should charger downtime be handled?

Reduce available ports or available hours to reflect known outages. Otherwise utilization will appear lower than the capacity that was actually usable.

Is energy utilization the same metric?

No. Time utilization measures occupied hours, while energy utilization compares delivered energy with a theoretical or rated energy capacity. They answer different planning questions.
