This calculator measures EV charger utilization from the number of chargers, reporting-period hours, active charging hours, and occupied hours. It reports active utilization, occupancy utilization, and the time vehicles remain connected without charging.

Site operators can use these metrics to evaluate charger availability, queue risk, and whether idle-fee or access-policy changes may improve turnover. The calculation is time-based and does not indicate energy delivered per session.

1. Count available chargers
Use chargers serving the same site and reporting period.

2. Enter reporting hours
Multiply calendar days by 24 unless the site is open for fewer hours.

3. Sum active charging time
Aggregate the hours when chargers actually deliver energy.

4. Sum occupied time
Include all plugged-in time, including completed sessions awaiting departure.

5. Review the utilization gap
The difference between occupancy and active utilization reflects idle occupation.

What the result means

Active utilization shows how much of the theoretical charger capacity is spent delivering energy.

Remove verified outage hours from availability when measuring operational performance.

Given: 8 chargers, 720 hours, 1,800 charging hours, and 2,600 occupied hours.

Calculation: Available hours = 8 × 720 = 5,760. Active utilization = 31.25%. Occupancy utilization = 45.14%. Idle occupied time = 800 hours.

Result: Active utilization is 31.3%, while 800 hours were occupied without charging.

What is the difference between occupancy and active utilization?

Occupancy includes all plugged-in time. Active utilization includes only periods when energy is being delivered.

Should broken chargers be included?

For calendar utilization, yes. For operational utilization, subtract documented outage hours from availability.

Can I combine chargers with different power levels?

You can combine them for time utilization, but the result will not reflect differences in energy-delivery capability.

What does a large idle-occupied value suggest?

Vehicles may remain connected after charging, reducing access for other drivers.

Is higher utilization always better?

Not necessarily. Very high occupancy can create queues, so utilization should be considered with service-level and wait-time goals.
