Email Impression Calculator

The Email Impression Calculator estimates total message exposures generated by an email campaign. Here, an impression represents one delivered email that is assumed to become visible in a recipient's inbox, adjusted by a visibility factor for placement and user behavior.

This estimate is useful for comparing email with media channels that are planned on an impression basis, building cross-channel reporting, or translating a send plan into an exposure volume. It should not be confused with opens: an inbox impression can occur without a tracked open, and visibility cannot be measured perfectly across providers.

1. Enter recipients per send

Use the average number of contacts included in each send.

2. Set the number of sends

Count all campaign messages included in the reporting period.

3. Apply deliverability

Use an expected or historical delivery rate for the relevant list and sender.

4. Estimate inbox visibility

Enter the share of delivered emails you expect to be meaningfully visible in inboxes.

5. Read the exposure totals

Review attempted sends, deliveries, and visibility-adjusted impressions separately.

Attempted sends = Recipients per send × Number of sends
Delivered emails = Attempted sends × Delivery rate
Estimated impressions = Delivered emails × Inbox visibility rate

Percentage inputs are converted to decimals. The visibility adjustment is an explicit assumption, not a universally reported email metric. Use a consistent definition when comparing periods or channels.

What the result means

The result is the estimated number of delivered emails likely to create a visible inbox exposure.

It is an exposure estimate and should not be presented as a measured open count.

Given

  • 40,000 recipients per send
  • 4 sends
  • 98% delivery rate
  • 75% inbox visibility

Calculation

Attempted sends = 40,000 × 4 = 160,000. Delivered emails = 160,000 × 0.98 = 156,800. Estimated impressions = 156,800 × 0.75 = 117,600.

Result

Estimated email impressions = 117,600.

Interpretation

Under the chosen visibility assumption, about three quarters of delivered emails are counted as likely inbox exposures.

Is an email impression the same as an open?

No. This calculator treats an impression as an estimated visible inbox exposure, while an open is a tracked interaction signal.

Why include a visibility rate?

Not every delivered message is equally likely to be noticed. The rate lets you make that planning assumption explicit.

Can I set visibility to 100%?

Yes, if you want impressions to equal delivered emails. Document that definition so reports remain comparable.

Should recipients per send be an average?

Use an average when list size varies across sends. For greater precision, calculate each send separately and add the results.

How does this differ from reach?

Impressions count repeated exposures. Reach counts distinct recipients at least once.
