Etsy Margin Estimator

The Etsy Margin Estimator calculates contribution profit and contribution margin for one sale after product cost, shipping subsidy, marketplace fees, payment processing, advertising, and other variable expenses. It also shows the break-even selling price implied by the entered cost structure.

This estimate helps sellers compare listings and test whether a promotion or ad-driven sale still leaves room to cover fixed overhead and owner compensation. It is not a tax return or a complete income statement; fixed expenses are intentionally excluded from the main margin.

  1. Enter buyer-paid revenue. Add the item sale price and shipping charged to the buyer.
  2. Enter direct product and shipping costs. Use the actual or expected cost for the order.
  3. Set the combined percentage fee. Include only percentage-based marketplace and payment charges you want modeled.
  4. Add fixed and attributed costs. Record per-order fees, advertising, packaging, or other variable expenses.
  5. Review contribution margin. A positive margin means the order contributes toward fixed overhead and profit.
  6. Check break-even price. This is the item price needed under the same shipping revenue and cost assumptions.

Gross revenue = Item price + Shipping revenue
Estimated fees = Gross revenue × Fee rate + Fixed fees
Contribution profit = Gross revenue − Product cost − Shipping cost − Estimated fees − Ad cost − Other variable cost
Contribution margin (%) = Contribution profit ÷ Gross revenue × 100

The break-even item price solves the same equation with contribution profit set to zero. Taxes and fixed overhead are excluded.

What the result means

The main result is the percentage of gross order revenue left after the entered variable costs.

Current Etsy fee schedules can vary by seller location, advertising participation, and service use; enter a rate that reflects the transaction being modeled.

Given: Item price $48, shipping revenue $6, product cost $14.50, shipping cost $7.20, fee rate 10.5%, fixed fees $0.45, ad cost $3.50, and other variable cost $1.25.

Calculation: Revenue = 48 + 6 = $54. Fees = 54 × 10.5% + 0.45 = $6.12. Contribution profit = 54 − 14.50 − 7.20 − 6.12 − 3.50 − 1.25 = $21.43. Margin = 21.43 ÷ 54 × 100 = 39.69%.

Result: The order has an estimated contribution margin of 39.69%.

Is contribution margin the same as net profit margin?

No. Contribution margin subtracts variable costs but not fixed overhead, income tax, or owner pay. Net profit requires a broader business-level calculation.

Should I include labor in product cost?

Include direct labor when it varies with each unit and you want the margin to reflect production effort. Keep fixed administrative time outside this order-level model.

How should Offsite Ads be entered?

Add the attributable ad cost directly or incorporate an expected percentage into the combined fee rate. Avoid counting it twice.

Can shipping revenue improve margin?

Yes when buyer-paid shipping exceeds the shipping and related fee cost. It can also reduce margin when the seller subsidizes fulfillment.

Why can a profitable order still have a low margin?

Profit dollars and margin percentage measure different things. High revenue with high variable costs can produce positive profit but a thin percentage cushion.
