EV Battery Energy Cost Estimator

This estimator calculates the electricity cost of an EV charging session from battery size, state-of-charge change, charging efficiency, and energy price. It reports both battery energy added and the larger amount that may be purchased from the grid.

Use it to compare home and public charging costs or estimate the expense of a regular commute. Session fees, parking charges, demand fees, and taxes can be added separately if they apply.

1. Enter usable capacity
Use the battery capacity available inside the normal state-of-charge window.

2. Set the charge increase
Enter the starting and target state of charge.

3. Set charging efficiency
Include energy lost in conversion, wiring, and thermal management.

4. Enter electricity price
Use the applicable home tariff or public charging energy rate.

5. Add a fixed fee if needed
Include a session or connection fee, but not time-based parking charges unless converted separately.

6. Review total cost
Compare the energy charge and fixed fee components.

What the result means

The total combines estimated energy cost and the entered fixed fee.

Taxes, time-based fees, subscription discounts, and demand charges are not automatically included.

Given: 75 kWh battery, 20% to 80%, 90% efficiency, $0.18/kWh, and no session fee.

Calculation: Battery energy = 45 kWh. Grid energy = 45 ÷ 0.90 = 50 kWh. Cost = 50 × $0.18 = $9.00.

Result: Estimated session cost is $9.00.

Why is grid energy higher than battery energy?

Some energy is lost in the charger, wiring, battery, and thermal-management system.

Should I include taxes in the electricity price?

Use an all-in marginal rate when possible. Otherwise add taxes or fees separately.

How do time-of-use tariffs affect the estimate?

Use the price for the hours when charging occurs. A session spanning multiple rates requires a weighted average or separate calculations.

Does the calculator include idle fees?

Only if you manually include them in the fixed session fee. Time-based idle fees are not calculated automatically.

Can I compare gasoline cost with this result?

Yes, but compare cost over the same driving distance and include realistic EV energy consumption and fuel economy.
