Event Carbon Emission Footprint Calculator

The Event Carbon Emission Footprint Calculator estimates an event’s greenhouse-gas footprint from four activity groups: attendee travel, venue electricity, catering, and waste. Each activity is multiplied by an emission factor that you enter, so the calculator can work with factors appropriate to your geography, transport mix, electricity source, menu, waste treatment, and reporting method.

This structure is useful for conferences, exhibitions, corporate meetings, festivals, and other events where organizers need a transparent first-pass inventory. The result shows total tCO2e and the contribution from each included source, making it easier to identify which activity dominates the estimate. It is a planning tool rather than a complete greenhouse-gas inventory; add or separately account for material sources that are outside the four fields used here.

1. Define the event boundary
Decide which event period, venues, attendee travel, meals, and waste are included so all inputs describe the same event.

2. Enter attendee travel activity
Add total passenger-kilometers and a matching kg CO2e per passenger-kilometer factor for the travel mix you are modeling.

3. Add venue electricity
Enter electricity use in kWh and the corresponding electricity emission factor.

4. Describe catering and waste

Passenger-km must be paired with kg CO2e/passenger-km, kWh with kg CO2e/kWh, meals with kg CO2e/meal, and kg of waste with kg CO2e/kg of waste.

What the result means

The main result is the sum of the four included event emission sources, expressed in metric tons of CO2 equivalent.

The estimate excludes any material sources not entered here, such as accommodation, freight, venue fuels, construction, refrigerants, or digital services.

Where should the event emission factors come from?

Use factors appropriate to your geography, reporting method, transport mix, electricity source, menu, and waste treatment. Keep a record of the source and version used for each factor.

Can I combine air, rail, and car travel into one travel factor?

Yes, if you have a defensible weighted factor for the combined passenger-kilometers. Otherwise, calculate modes separately and add them outside this simplified four-source model.

Why does the calculator divide by 1,000?

Each activity is multiplied by a factor stated in kilograms of CO2e. Dividing by 1,000 converts kilograms of CO2e to metric tons of CO2e.

What event sources are not included?

Possible omissions include accommodation, freight, venue fuels, refrigerants, temporary structures, production materials, digital services, and employee travel.

Can I compare two event designs with this tool?
