Family Time Estimator

Estimate how a family’s available weekly time is distributed among sleep, work or school, commuting, chores, caregiving, and personal activities. The calculator reports committed hours, free hours, and each person’s average free time.

It can support schedule planning and reveal whether recurring commitments exceed the hours available in a week. Time quality, overlapping activities, and different schedules among family members are not modeled.

Formula:

Family free time = family members × 168 weekly hours − [family members × (daily sleep × 7 + weekly work or school + weekly commute) + shared chores + shared caregiving].

What the result means

Total family free time per week is the central planning estimate produced from the values you enter.

Do not double-count shared activities that occur at the same time for multiple people unless each person is independently occupied.

Given: 4 family members, 8 sleep hours daily, 40 work or school hours weekly, 5 commute hours, 20 shared chore hours, and 25 caregiving hours.

Calculation: Available time = 4 × 168 = 672 hours. Committed time = 4 × (56 + 40 + 5) + 20 + 25 = 449 hours. Free time = 223 hours.

Result: The family has an estimated 223 free hours per week, or 55.8 hours per person.

Why does the calculator use 168 hours?

Each person has 24 hours × 7 days, or 168 hours, in a week.

Should shared chores be multiplied by family members?

No. Enter the combined person-hours spent by the family on shared chores.

Can activities overlap?

The model assumes categories do not overlap. Overlapping activities can overstate committed time.

What if committed time exceeds available time?

Displayed free time stops at zero, indicating the schedule inputs are not feasible without overlap or adjustment.

Is all free time discretionary?

Not necessarily. Unentered personal care, meals, errands, and transitions may consume part of it.
