What the result means

The main result shows the mass of feedstock input required for each unit of usable machine output. Lower ratios, when product quality is equivalent, indicate higher mass recovery.

This ratio does not measure animal growth efficiency, energy efficiency, throughput rate, product quality, or economic efficiency by itself.

Given: 12,500 lb input, 12,100 lb finished output, and 180 lb rejected for rework.

Calculation: Usable output = 12,100 − 180 = 11,920 lb. Ratio = 12,500 ÷ 11,920 = 1.0487. Recovery = 11,920 ÷ 12,500 × 100 = 95.36%. Material loss = 580 lb.

Result: Conversion ratio = 1.049 lb input per lb usable output.

This indicates the mass recovery of the machinery process, not the biological conversion efficiency of livestock.

Why is this called a feed conversion calculator if it is for machinery?

In this tool, feed means material fed into the machine. The ratio compares machine input with usable processed output and is explicitly different from livestock feed conversion.

Should rework material count as a loss?

For an immediate usable-output calculation, yes, because it is not yet finished product. If rework later becomes usable, you can rerun the batch using the final recovered amount.

Can moisture loss make machinery performance look worse?

Yes. Drying or heating during processing can reduce scale weight even if dry-matter recovery is high. Normalize to a common moisture basis when that effect is important.

What if finished output exceeds input mass?

That can occur if water or other ingredients are added during processing. In that case the ratio is still mathematical, but it no longer represents simple mass recovery of the original feedstock.

How is this different from throughput?

Throughput measures output per unit of time, such as tons per hour. This conversion ratio compares input mass with usable output mass and does not include processing time.
