In this page, “feed conversion” is used as an input-to-output ratio: pounds of fertilizer product applied divided by pounds of dry-matter feed yield. A lower value means less fertilizer product was applied per pound of feed output, but it does not by itself indicate better agronomic or economic performance.

This ratio can help compare field treatments or seasons when fertilizer application and feed yield are both recorded on a consistent area basis. Both fertilizer and feed output are entered as pounds, so the main ratio is pounds of fertilizer product per pound of feed dry matter. Multiply by 2,000 if you want an equivalent pounds-of-fertilizer-per-ton-of-feed interpretation.

What the result means

The main result is an input-intensity ratio showing how much fertilizer product was applied for each pound of recorded feed dry matter produced.

The ratio does not isolate the fertilizer's causal effect on yield because weather, soil fertility, species, harvest timing, and other management practices also influence feed output.

Given:

  • Fertilizer product applied = 10,000 lb
  • Feed output = 250,000 lb DM
  • Target nutrient concentration = 46%
  • Treated area = 100 ac

Calculation:
Fertilizer-to-feed ratio = 10,000 ÷ 250,000 = 0.0400 lb/lb DM. Target nutrient = 10,000 × 0.46 = 4,600 lb. Nutrient-to-feed ratio = 4,600 ÷ 250,000 = 0.0184 lb/lb DM.

Result:
Fertilizer-to-feed conversion ratio = 0.0400 lb fertilizer/lb DM feed.

Interpretation:
The field used 100 lb of fertilizer product per acre and produced 2,500 lb DM per acre; the main ratio is equivalent to 80 lb of fertilizer product per ton of feed dry matter.

Is this the same as livestock feed conversion ratio?

No. Livestock FCR is feed consumed divided by animal weight gain. This page compares fertilizer input with feed or forage output from the treated area.

Why use dry-matter feed yield?

Dry matter removes most of the distortion caused by changing forage moisture. That makes field-to-field or season-to-season comparisons more consistent.

Does a lower fertilizer-to-feed ratio mean the fertilizer program is better?

Not necessarily. A lower ratio can reflect higher yield, lower fertilizer input, residual soil fertility, weather, or other management factors. Evaluate agronomic response and economics separately.

Can I compare different fertilizer products?

You can compare product-input ratios, but different analyses may make product pounds misleading. The nutrient-input ratio is more comparable when the same target nutrient is used.

What happens if feed output is zero?

The ratio is undefined because the calculation would divide by zero. The calculator therefore requires a positive feed or forage output.
