1. Estimate dry-matter intake
Enter the total feed or forage dry matter consumed by the group during the measurement period.
2. Record starting liveweight
Use the group's combined starting weight on a consistent weighing basis.
3. Record ending liveweight
Use the combined ending weight from the same group and period.
4. Enter head count
The head count is used to show per-animal gain and intake; the ratio itself uses group totals.
5. Interpret the ratio
A value such as 4.0:1 means about four pounds of dry matter were consumed for each pound of liveweight gain.
