Pasture Stocking Feed Conversion Calculator

The Pasture Stocking Feed Conversion Calculator measures how much feed or dry-matter intake is associated with each unit of liveweight gain during a grazing period. Feed conversion ratio (FCR) is calculated by dividing feed consumed by weight gained, so a lower ratio means less feed was used per unit of gain.

For pasture systems, the hardest input is often true intake because grazing consumption is not measured as directly as bunk-fed feed. The tool is therefore best used when you have a defensible intake estimate from forage disappearance, marker methods, or another farm record. The result can support comparisons among grazing periods or management treatments, but it should be interpreted alongside forage quality, animal class, weather, supplementation, and health.

1. Estimate dry-matter intake
Enter the total feed or forage dry matter consumed by the group during the measurement period.

2. Record starting liveweight
Use the group's combined starting weight on a consistent weighing basis.

3. Record ending liveweight
Use the combined ending weight from the same group and period.

4. Enter head count
The head count is used to show per-animal gain and intake; the ratio itself uses group totals.

5. Interpret the ratio
A value such as 4.0:1 means about four pounds of dry matter were consumed for each pound of liveweight gain.

Total liveweight gain = Ending liveweight − Starting liveweight Feed conversion ratio = Feed consumed ÷ Total liveweight gain

Feed and liveweight must use compatible mass units. This version expects pounds and requires positive liveweight gain; a zero or negative gain does not produce a meaningful conventional FCR.

What the result means

The main result expresses units of feed dry matter consumed per unit of liveweight gained. Lower values indicate less feed input per unit of gain, all else equal.

Pasture intake estimates can carry substantial uncertainty, so compare ratios only when the intake method and weighing conditions are reasonably consistent.

Given:

  • Feed consumed = 18,000 lb DM
  • Starting group liveweight = 67,500 lb
  • Ending group liveweight = 72,000 lb
  • Animals = 75 head

Calculation:
Liveweight gain = 72,000 − 67,500 = 4,500 lb. FCR = 18,000 ÷ 4,500 = 4.00.

Result:
Feed conversion ratio = 4.00:1.

Interpretation:
The group consumed an estimated four pounds of dry matter for each pound of liveweight gain, with 60 lb of gain per animal over the period.

Is a lower feed conversion ratio always better?

A lower ratio means less feed was consumed per unit of measured gain, but it should not be judged in isolation. Forage cost, animal health, finishing targets, and measurement quality also matter.

Should feed be entered on an as-fed or dry-matter basis?

Dry matter is preferable because pasture and supplemental feeds can contain very different moisture levels. Mixing as-fed values with dry-matter values will distort the ratio.

What if the group lost weight?

This calculator does not report a conventional FCR when ending weight is not greater than starting weight. Investigate intake, health, weighing conditions, and the production objective instead.

Does head count change the FCR?

Not when feed and weight gain are entered as group totals. Head count is used only to display per-animal intake and gain.

How is pasture FCR different from a confinement-feedlot FCR?

The formula is the same, but pasture intake is often estimated rather than directly weighed. That makes measurement method and forage disappearance assumptions especially important.
