Fleet EV Charger Range Loss Estimator

This estimator calculates the expected range shortfall across an electric fleet when real operating consumption is higher than the planning assumption. It compares planned and actual energy use over a route, then scales the difference across all vehicles.

Fleet operators can use the result to assess dispatch buffer, identify routes that need additional charging, and translate efficiency changes into total lost miles. The calculation does not identify why consumption increased; weather, payload, speed, idling, elevation, and driver behavior should be investigated separately.

Planned route energy = Route distance × Planned consumption ÷ 100
Actual route energy = Route distance × Actual consumption ÷ 100
Extra energy per vehicle = max(0, Actual energy − Planned energy)
Equivalent range loss per vehicle = Extra energy ÷ Actual consumption × 100
Extra fleet energy = Extra energy per vehicle × Vehicles

What the result means

The main result is the route-distance equivalent of the unexpected extra energy use for each vehicle.

This is an operational range shortfall, not permanent battery degradation.

Given: 25 vehicles, 120 miles each, planned consumption 28 kWh/100 mi, actual consumption 34 kWh/100 mi, and 75 kWh usable battery.

Calculation: Planned energy = 120 × 28 ÷ 100 = 33.6 kWh. Actual energy = 120 × 34 ÷ 100 = 40.8 kWh. Extra energy per vehicle = 7.2 kWh. Equivalent range loss = 7.2 ÷ 34 × 100 = 21.18 miles. Extra fleet energy = 7.2 × 25 = 180 kWh.

Result: Estimated range loss is 21.2 miles per vehicle.

Actual remaining energy is 34.2 kWh per vehicle versus 41.4 kWh under the plan.

Is the range loss measured against rated range?

No. It is measured against the route plan created from the planned consumption input.

What if vehicles travel different distances?

Use weighted averages or calculate separate route groups. A single average can hide high-risk assignments.

Can actual consumption be lower than planned?

Yes. In that case the calculator reports zero range loss rather than a negative loss.

Why include battery capacity?

It shows planned and actual remaining energy after the route, which helps identify vehicles approaching the usable limit.

Does payload belong in the formula?

Payload is not a separate input. Its effect should be reflected in the actual or expected consumption value.
