This calculator estimates the greenhouse-gas footprint associated with a quantity of food using an emission factor per kilogram, then adds a simple waste allowance and any separately estimated packaging or other included emissions. It can support menu planning, procurement comparisons, food-service reporting, event estimates, or scenario testing when the relevant food emission factor is known.

Food footprints vary substantially by product, production system, geography, transport, processing, storage, and lifecycle boundary, so the calculator does not supply a universal factor. Enter a factor from a source appropriate to the food and scope you are analyzing. The waste input is modeled as additional emissions proportional to the food-product emissions, which is a simplification; detailed food-waste accounting may instead depend on extra purchased quantity, disposal route, and avoided-product assumptions. Use the result as a transparent estimate whose quality depends on the factor and boundary you provide.

Where can I get a food emission factor?

Use a credible lifecycle inventory, supplier dataset, published study, or organizational factor set that matches the food type and boundary you need. Different sources can produce different values.

Can I combine different foods into one average factor?

Yes if you have a weighted-average factor that reflects the quantities in the mix. For better detail, calculate major food categories separately and add the results.

How is food waste modeled?

The calculator adds a percentage of product emissions as a simple waste allowance. It does not model disposal pathways such as landfill, composting, or anaerobic digestion.

Should packaging emissions be entered separately?

Only if your chosen food emission factor does not already include packaging and you want packaging inside the analysis boundary. Avoid double counting lifecycle stages.

Why does this calculator ask for factors instead of using fixed values?

Food carbon intensity varies too much by product, production system, geography, and methodology for one fixed factor to be reliable across all cases.
