Freight Carbon Emission Footprint Calculator

The Freight Carbon Emission Footprint Calculator estimates shipment emissions from freight mass, transport distance, and an emissions factor expressed per tonne-kilometer. It is suited to logistics teams, shippers, buyers, and analysts who already have or can obtain an emissions factor for the relevant transport mode, vehicle, route, carrier, or methodology.

The calculator intentionally keeps the emissions factor as an input because freight factors can differ substantially by mode, load factor, fuel, geography, and accounting framework. The result reports both total kgCO2e and metric tons of CO2e, plus tonne-kilometers of freight activity, so users can trace how the final footprint is built from transport work and the selected factor.

Where should the freight emissions factor come from?

Use a factor from the carrier, your organization’s approved methodology, or another source appropriate to the mode and reporting scope. The calculator does not supply a default official factor.

Can I use miles instead of kilometers?

Not directly with the stated factor units. Convert miles to kilometers or use a factor that has been converted to kgCO2e per tonne-kilometer.

Does shipment mass include packaging?

Use the mass definition required by your chosen methodology. Some data sets use cargo mass only, while others may use gross transported mass.

Can I combine road, rail, air, and sea legs in one calculation?

Only if one factor validly represents the entire movement. For better accuracy, calculate each leg separately with its own distance and factor, then add the results.

Why show tonne-kilometers?

Tonne-kilometers are the activity basis behind many freight emissions factors. Showing them makes it easier to audit the mass × distance part of the estimate.
