The Freight Carbon Reduction Target Calculator converts a baseline freight footprint and a percentage reduction goal into a target emissions level and the absolute amount of CO2e that must be cut. It is useful for logistics decarbonization plans, carrier programs, procurement targets, and internal sustainability roadmaps where the baseline footprint has already been measured.

A target can be easier to manage when it is expressed in both tonnes and percentage terms. The calculator therefore shows the target footprint, total reduction required, and an average annual reduction amount across the chosen number of years. The annual figure is a straight-line planning rate, not a required pathway; actual reductions may occur unevenly as routes, modes, fuels, equipment, and supplier contracts change.

Assumptions: The annual reduction figure uses a simple linear allocation. Compound or milestone-based pathways can produce different year-by-year targets while reaching the same endpoint.

Is the target calculated from the baseline year or the previous year?

This calculator applies the percentage to the original baseline. It does not compound a new reduction percentage from each successive year.

Can I use an intensity target such as emissions per tonne-kilometer?

Not directly. This page is designed for absolute tCO2e targets; an intensity target requires an activity denominator as well as emissions.

What if the target horizon includes partial years?

You can enter decimal years, such as 2.5. The average annual reduction will scale to that duration.

Does a 100% target mean zero operational freight emissions?

Mathematically, yes: the target output becomes zero relative to the entered baseline. Whether that is practical or how residual emissions are handled is outside this calculation.

How can I connect this target to shipment decisions?

Use the required reduction as a planning constraint, then test changes in distance, mode, load factor, or emissions factors with a freight footprint model.
