Rather than treating handicap itself as a physiological measure, this tool uses golf-specific workload inputs that are more directly connected to fatigue.

The result is an estimated number of recovery hours plus a workload score and recovery-priority band. A higher estimate suggests that the recent schedule, effort level, soreness, or sleep shortfall warrants more spacing before the next hard session. It is a planning estimate, not a medical readiness test, and individual recovery can vary with age, injury status, heat, walking distance, travel, and other factors.

The estimator uses a simple workload-and-recovery model:

Rounds are counted over the last seven days, hours are per round, RPE and soreness use 0–10 style scales, and sleep is hours per night. The displayed recovery time is capped at 120 hours to keep extreme inputs from producing an impractical number.

What the result means

The estimate is a planning window for recovery after the recent golf workload; larger values indicate more accumulated load, soreness, or sleep debt.

This is not a medical clearance or injury diagnosis. Travel, illness, heat exposure, walking terrain, and individual conditioning can materially change recovery needs.

Given: 3 rounds, 4.2 hours per round, RPE 5, soreness 3/10, and 7 hours of sleep.

Calculation: Workload = 3 × 4.2 × 5 = 63 AU. Sleep shortfall = 8 − 7 = 1 hour. Recovery = 12 + (0.55 × 63) + (2.5 × 3) + (5 × 1) = 59.15 hours.

Result: About 59 hours of recovery. That points to a relatively high recovery priority before another demanding session.

Why does the estimator use RPE instead of handicap?

Handicap describes scoring ability, not how physically taxing a round was. RPE provides a direct effort input that can change with walking, weather, terrain, practice volume, and competition pressure.

Should practice sessions be counted as rounds?

Not in the rounds field. If practice has been substantial, use a higher average RPE or interpret the result conservatively because the model only measures round-based volume.

What does a high recovery priority mean?

It means the model found enough workload, soreness, or sleep shortfall to produce a longer recovery window. It is a cue for scheduling, not a guarantee that you are unready to play.

Can I enter zero rounds?

Yes. Zero rounds is valid and lets soreness and sleep still influence the estimate, which can be useful after travel or a non-golf training block.

How is this different from a training-load calculator?

A training-load calculator focuses on how much work was completed. This estimator uses workload as one input and adds soreness and sleep to estimate a recovery window.
