1. Enter practice duration

Where:

  • Practice shots = number of meaningful practice shots
  • Practice minutes = session duration in minutes
  • RPE = average perceived effort from 1 to 10
  • High-intensity share = percentage of swings performed near maximal effort

Assumptions: The model increases load for both perceived effort and high-intensity swings while using a square-root duration adjustment so time does not overwhelm shot count.

The session is moderate in overall load, with the high-intensity swing share raising the score above what shot count and RPE alone would produce.

This calculator provides an estimate for planning and comparison; real-world outcomes can vary with conditions and individual factors.

Given:

  • Practice duration = 75 minutes
  • Practice shots = 90
  • Average effort = 6/10
  • High-intensity swings = 25%

Calculation:
Shot density = 90 ÷ 75 = 1.20 shots/min
Intensity factor = 0.6 × [1 + 0.25 × 0.6] = 0.69
Base shot load = 90 × 0.69 = 62.1
Training load = 62.1 × √(75 ÷ 60) ≈ 69.4

Result: 69.4 load units.

Interpretation: The session is moderate in overall load, with the high-intensity swing share raising the score above what shot count and RPE alone would produce.

Should putting strokes be counted as practice shots?

Count them if you want the tool to represent the entire practice session. For swing-load tracking, you may prefer to calculate putting separately because its physical demand is much lower.

What counts as a high-intensity swing?

Use swings performed near full speed, speed-training swings, or unusually forceful shots. Normal controlled full swings do not all need to be classified as high intensity.

Does a longer session always create a higher load?

All else equal, yes, but duration enters through a square-root adjustment. Shot count and intensity still have a strong influence.

Can I use this for an 18-hole round?

It is designed for practice sessions. A full round includes walking, terrain, weather, and competitive stress that this model does not capture well.

How is this different from the handicap performance score?

Training load describes practice work performed. Handicap performance score evaluates how a played round compares with a simplified handicap expectation.
