Losses are applied sequentially, so the combined percentage is slightly different from simply adding the two percentages.

What the result means

The main result is the forecast mass of grain expected to remain usable after the two entered loss factors.

The estimate does not predict moisture migration, spoilage, insects, market grade, or specific storage failures. Use monitored condition data where available.

Given: 120,000 lb stored, 1.8% shrink, and 0.6% additional unusable loss.

Calculation: After shrink = 120,000 × 0.982 = 117,840 lb. Usable = 117,840 × 0.994 = 117,132.96 lb. Recovery = 117,132.96 ÷ 120,000 × 100 = 97.61%.

Result: Forecast usable grain = 117,132.96 lb.

This leaves an estimated 2,867.04 lb unavailable compared with the inbound quantity.

Why are the two losses applied sequentially?

The second loss applies to grain remaining after the first loss. This reflects two separate loss stages more accurately than adding percentages and applying the sum once.

Can I use bushels instead of pounds?

The ratio math works with any consistent mass or volume unit, but the labels on this page are pounds. Convert to pounds first if you want the displayed units to be literal.

What should I include in shrink?

Use the loss category that matches your own records, such as expected scale-weight shrink related to moisture or handling. Keep the definition consistent when comparing forecasts.

Can total expected loss exceed 100%?

Each individual loss input is limited to 0–100%. Very high values can produce little or no usable grain, which may be mathematically valid but operationally unrealistic.

How is this different from grain storage inventory?

Inventory states what is currently measured or recorded. This calculator forecasts a future usable quantity from the stored amount and assumed losses.
