What the result means

The main result is the modeled quantity of residual impact to be covered by offsets under the selected scenario.

Use the same accounting boundary for the baseline, reductions, and offsets; otherwise the comparison can be misleading.

Given: Baseline impact = 1,200 units; direct reduction = 40%; offset coverage = 90%.

Calculation: Residual = 1,200 × (1 − 0.40) = 720 units. Required offset = 720 × 0.90 = 648 units.

Result: 648 units of modeled offset requirement.

Interpretation: Direct measures remove 480 units, leaving 720 units; covering 90% of that residual requires 648 offset units.

Does this estimate prove compliance with an offset program?

No. It only models quantities from your assumptions. Program rules may define eligible baselines, reductions, additionality, verification, and accepted offset instruments differently.

What unit should I use for baseline impact?

Use any consistent unit that represents the impact you are managing, such as a project-specific score or an emissions-equivalent quantity. The output uses the same unit.

Can offset coverage be below 100%?

Yes. A value below 100% models partial coverage of the residual impact; 100% models full coverage of the calculated residual.

What happens if direct reduction is 100%?

The residual becomes zero, so the required offset is also zero regardless of the coverage percentage.

How is this different from a reduction target calculator?

A reduction target focuses on how much impact you aim to eliminate directly. This estimator focuses on the portion left after direct reduction and how much of that residual you choose to offset.
