The Home EV Charger Charger Utilization Calculator measures the share of available charging-port hours occupied during a month. It combines session count and average session duration, then compares occupied time with the total hours available across all ports.

Homeowners, multifamily property managers, and small fleet operators can use utilization to assess whether existing charging capacity is lightly used, balanced, or approaching a scheduling constraint. Time utilization does not measure energy throughput, because sessions may draw different power levels or remain connected after charging finishes.

1. Enter monthly sessions
Count completed charging sessions across the ports being evaluated.

2. Enter average session duration
Use connected or actively occupied hours consistently for every session.

Enter the hours each port is available during the month, excluding planned closures if appropriate.

Count independent ports that can charge vehicles at the same time.

5. Review utilization
Compare occupied port-hours with total available port-hours and remaining capacity.

Occupied port-hours = Sessions × Average hours per session Available port-hours = Available hours per port × Number of ports Utilization (%) = Occupied port-hours ÷ Available port-hours × 100

The calculation assumes the average session duration is representative and that sessions do not occupy more ports simultaneously than are available.

What the result means

Utilization is the percentage of available port time occupied during the measurement period.

High connection-time utilization may overstate active charging if vehicles remain plugged in after reaching their target charge.

Given: 20 sessions per month, 5 hours per session, 720 available hours per port, and 1 port.

Calculation: Occupied hours = 20 × 5 = 100 port-hours. Available hours = 720 × 1 = 720 port-hours. Utilization = 100 ÷ 720 × 100 = 13.89%.

Result: Charger utilization is approximately 13.89%.

Should session duration include idle plugged-in time?

Use either connection time or active charging time, but label and compare the metric consistently.

Can utilization exceed 100%?

Not for valid port-hour data. A value above 100% indicates overlapping assumptions or an incorrect port count or availability period.

Does low utilization mean the charger is unnecessary?

Not necessarily. Home charging value may come from convenience and readiness rather than continuous use.

How is energy utilization different?

Energy utilization compares delivered kWh with maximum possible energy, while this tool measures occupied time.

When might another port be needed?

Consider expansion when schedules conflict, queues occur, or required charging cannot be completed within available windows, not solely from one utilization percentage.
