International Fuel Calculator

The International Fuel Calculator estimates how much fuel an overseas drive will require and converts the destination fuel cost into a home currency. It supports either liters per 100 kilometers or miles per gallon, then adds an optional driving buffer for detours, traffic, or route uncertainty.

The tool is useful for rental-car budgeting and cross-border road trips. Use the fuel economy of the actual vehicle when available, enter the local pump price in destination currency, and supply the current home-currency value of one destination-currency unit.

1. Enter planned distance

Use total driving distance in kilometers, including all legs of the itinerary.

2. Choose the economy format

Select liters per 100 kilometers or U.S. miles per gallon to match the vehicle information.

3. Enter vehicle efficiency

Use a realistic combined-driving figure rather than the best-case highway rating.

4. Enter the local pump price

Use destination currency per liter.

5. Enter the exchange rate

Specify how much home currency equals one unit of destination currency.

6. Add a distance buffer

Allow for detours, local driving, and route changes.

Where:

  • MPG — U.S. miles traveled per U.S. gallon
  • Exchange rate — home-currency units per one destination-currency unit
  • Buffer rate — extra distance percentage

Assumptions: Fuel price and exchange rate remain constant for the modeled drive, and the chosen fuel economy represents average real-world use.

What the result means

The main result is the estimated fuel cost converted to the traveler’s home currency.

Rental fuel policies, one-way return fees, tolls, and parking are not included.

Given:

  • Distance: 1,200 km
  • Fuel economy: 7.5 L/100 km
  • Fuel price: 1.85 local units/L
  • Exchange rate: 0.74 home units per local unit
  • Buffer: 8%

Calculation:

Adjusted distance = 1,200 × 1.08 = 1,296 km

Fuel required = 1,296 × 7.5 ÷ 100 = 97.2 L

Local cost = 97.2 × 1.85 = 179.82 local units

Home cost = 179.82 × 0.74 = 133.07 home units

Result: 133.07 home-currency units.

Interpretation: The route is expected to consume 97.2 liters after allowing for additional driving.

Which MPG definition does the calculator use?

It uses U.S. miles per U.S. gallon. Imperial MPG uses a different gallon size and must be converted before entry.

Why is the fuel price entered per liter?

Many destinations post pump prices per liter. Convert gallon-based prices to a per-liter figure before entering them.

Should the distance include the return trip?

Yes. Enter the full planned driving distance for every leg.

What exchange-rate direction is required?

Enter home-currency units per one local-currency unit. For example, 0.74 means one local unit costs 0.74 home units.

Does the estimate include refueling fees from a rental company?

No. Add rental-company service charges separately because they are not ordinary pump fuel costs.
