International Hotel Calculator

The International Hotel Calculator estimates the full cost of overseas lodging from room count, nights, nightly rate, tax, and one-time fees. It then converts the local-currency total into a home currency and allocates the amount per traveler.

Use the calculator to compare hotel quotes that present taxes and resort or cleaning fees differently. Enter the rate for one room per night, include only fees not already built into that rate, and use an exchange rate expressed as home-currency units per one local-currency unit.

Room subtotal = Rooms × Nights × Nightly rateEstimated tax = Room subtotal × (Tax rate ÷ 100)Local total = Room subtotal + Estimated tax + One-time feesHome-currency total = Local total × Exchange rateHome cost per traveler = Home-currency total ÷ Travelers

Where:

  • Nightly rate — price for one room for one night
  • One-time fees — charges added once to the stay
  • Exchange rate — home-currency units per local-currency unit

Assumptions: Tax applies only to the room subtotal and all one-time fees are entered separately. Actual tax treatment of fees may vary.

What the result means

The main result estimates the entire stay in the selected home-currency units.

Deposits, incidental holds, breakfast, parking, and city taxes should be included when they are not part of the entered rate or fee.

Given:

  • 1 room for 6 nights
  • Nightly rate: 180 local units
  • Tax: 12%
  • One-time fees: 90 local units
  • Exchange rate: 1.09 home units per local unit
  • 2 travelers

Calculation:

Room subtotal = 1 × 6 × 180 = 1,080 local units

Tax = 1,080 × 0.12 = 129.60

Local total = 1,080 + 129.60 + 90 = 1,299.60

Home total = 1,299.60 × 1.09 = 1,416.56

Per traveler = 1,416.56 ÷ 2 = 708.28

Result: 1,416.56 home-currency units.

Interpretation: The lodging budget is about 708.28 home-currency units per traveler.

Does the nightly rate apply to each traveler?

No. It applies to one room per night. The traveler count is used only to show an equal per-person allocation.

Should city tax be entered as a percentage or fee?

Use the percentage field when it is based on room price. Use the fee field for a fixed per-stay amount, or combine known fixed charges before entry.

What if fees are charged per night?

Multiply the per-night fee by the number of nights and enter the resulting total as one-time fees.

Can I compare refundable and nonrefundable rates?

Yes. Run each quote separately with its own nightly rate and fees, while considering cancellation terms outside the calculation.

Why can my card statement differ from the estimate?

The settlement exchange rate, card fee, deposit timing, and hotel adjustments may differ from the assumptions entered.
