Kitchen Remodel Waste Allowance Estimator

The Kitchen Remodel Waste Allowance Estimator calculates how much extra material to order above a measured base requirement. It is useful for flooring, tile, trim, panel products, and other materials where cuts, defects, breakage, pattern matching, or future repairs justify buying more than the net installed quantity.

Extra quantity = Base requirement × Waste allowance %
Total order quantity = Base requirement + Extra quantity
Packages = ceiling(Total order quantity ÷ Units per package)

What the result means

The main result is the material quantity after adding the selected waste allowance.

The package count always rounds up because a partial package normally cannot satisfy the required quantity.

Given: Base requirement = 275 units; waste allowance = 8%; package size = 24 units.

Calculation: Extra = 275 × 0.08 = 22 units. Total = 297 units. Packages = ceiling(297 ÷ 24) = ceiling(12.375) = 13.

Result: Order requirement = 297 units, corresponding to 13 full packages.

Interpretation: Buying 13 packages supplies 312 units, leaving 15 units above the modeled requirement because of package rounding.

Is waste the same as material left over after installation?

Not exactly. Waste allowance is an ordering buffer. Some of it may become offcuts or breakage, while some may remain usable for future repairs.

Can I enter square feet as the unit?

Yes. The calculator treats the quantity generically, so square feet works as long as the package coverage is entered in square feet as well.

Why does the package count round up?

If the calculated requirement exceeds the coverage of a whole number of packages, another full package is needed to meet the quantity.

Should I include attic stock for future repairs?

If you want dedicated spare material beyond normal installation waste, increase the allowance or add the desired spare quantity to the base requirement.
