Learning Management System Completion Forecast Estimator

The Learning Management System Completion Forecast Estimator projects an end-of-period completion rate from the progress already recorded in an LMS. It is designed for course owners who need a simple pace-based view of whether a cohort is likely to finish on target before a deadline.

The estimator turns the current completion percentage into an average progress rate per elapsed day, then extends that pace through the full program window. It also translates the projected percentage into an estimated number of completers. Because learner activity often accelerates near deadlines or slows after launch, the forecast is best used as a baseline scenario that can be refreshed as new LMS data arrives.

1. Enter cohort size
Use the number of learners included in the completion target.

2. Add current completion
Enter the percentage already marked complete in the LMS for this cohort.

3. Record elapsed time
Count how many days have passed since the measurement period began.

4. Set the full window
Enter the total number of days available for completion, including days already elapsed.

5. Read the forecast
Use the projected rate and projected completer count as a pace-based baseline, then update the inputs as new completion data arrives.

Daily completion pace = Current completion rate ÷ Days elapsed

Projected completion rate = min(100%, Daily completion pace × Total program days)

Projected completers = Enrollment × Projected completion rate

Assumptions: The model extends the average completion pace linearly and caps the result at 100%. It does not account for deadline surges, reminders, cohort attrition, or changing assignment difficulty.

What the result means

The main result is the completion percentage expected by the end of the program if the average pace observed so far continues.

A linear pace forecast is a planning baseline, not a probability model; refresh it as learner behavior changes.

Calculation:
Daily pace = 36% ÷ 18 = 2.00 percentage points per day
Projected completion = 2.00% × 50 = 100% after the 100% cap
Projected completers = 1,500 × 100% = 1,500

Result:
100.0% projected completion; 1,500 projected completers

The current linear pace reaches the ceiling before the end date. That does not mean every learner is guaranteed to finish; it indicates the observed aggregate pace is sufficient to reach 100%.

What does a 100% forecast mean?

It means the current average aggregate pace would reach or exceed 100% by the end of the entered period, so the calculator caps the forecast at 100%. It is not a guarantee that every individual learner will finish.

Should I enter percent complete or course progress?

Use the share of the cohort that has fully met your completion rule, not the average percentage of content viewed, unless those are the same metric in your LMS.

Why can a linear forecast be misleading?

Completion behavior is often uneven. Reminders, due dates, vacations, difficult modules, and dropout can change the pace materially after the measurement date.

What if the program has already ended?

Set total program days equal to days elapsed to view the current pace without extending it. If you are forecasting a future extension, use the revised total window instead.

How is this different from an engagement score?

Completion forecast estimates the likely final completion percentage from observed pace. Engagement scores summarize participation behavior and can move even when formal completions have not yet occurred.
