Online Course Completion Completion Forecast Estimator

Forecast the number of learners likely to finish an online course from its current enrollment funnel. The estimator starts with total enrollments, applies an activation rate to approximate how many learners meaningfully begin the course, and then applies an expected completion rate to that activated group. It also reports forecast non-completions and the overall completion share of all enrolled learners. This structure is useful when a course team has a large number of sign-ups but knows that not every registrant starts learning. Separating activation from completion makes the forecast more informative than applying one completion percentage to the raw enrollment count. Course managers can use the result for certificate volume, support staffing, cohort reporting, or scenario planning when onboarding or learner persistence changes. The model is intentionally simple: it assumes the entered rates are reasonable for the cohort being forecast and does not model weekly dropout timing or individual learner probability.

Percentage inputs are converted to decimals. The model treats activation and completion as sequential stages.

What the result means

The forecast combines the share of enrollments expected to activate with the completion rate expected among those activated learners.

Use consistent definitions for activation and completion when comparing cohorts.

Given: 1,200 learners enroll, 78% activate, and 64% of activated learners finish.

Calculation: Activated learners = 1,200 × 0.78 = 936. Forecast completions = 936 × 0.64 = 599.04, or about 599 learners. Overall enrollment completion rate = 599.04 ÷ 1,200 × 100 = 49.92%.

Result: Expect about 599 completions, equal to roughly 49.9% of all enrollments.

Why use an activation rate before the completion rate?

Many online courses have registrants who never meaningfully start. Separating activation from completion prevents those learners from being treated as if they faced the same persistence process as active learners.

Which completion rate should I enter?

Use a rate defined on activated learners, not all enrollments. Historical cohorts are most useful when their audience, course format, and completion rule are similar.

Can I forecast a course that is already in progress?

Yes, if you reinterpret enrolled learners and rates for the remaining population. For a cleaner in-progress forecast, exclude learners whose outcome is already known and model only unresolved learners.

Why might the real result differ from the forecast?

Completion can shift with course difficulty, deadlines, reminders, instructor presence, seasonality, and learner mix. This calculator does not model those factors separately.

Is overall completion the same as activated-learner completion?

No. Overall completion uses every enrollment as the denominator, while activated-learner completion uses only those who meaningfully started. The overall rate will be equal to or lower when activation is below 100%.
