Orchard Yield Yield Forecast Estimator

The Orchard Yield Yield Forecast Estimator projects marketable fruit production from orchard area, planting density, expected yield per bearing tree, and two realization factors. It is intended for rough crop-volume planning before harvest, when you need an estimate for labor, bins, storage, packing, or sales preparation.

The forecast separates the share of trees expected to bear a normal crop from the share of gross fruit expected to be marketable. This makes the assumptions visible and easy to adjust as bloom, fruit set, thinning, weather, and crop condition become clearer.

1. Enter orchard acreage

Total trees = Orchard area × Trees per acre
Equivalent bearing trees = Total trees × (Bearing rate ÷ 100)
Gross fruit = Equivalent bearing trees × Yield per bearing tree
Marketable yield = Gross fruit × (Marketable rate ÷ 100)

The bearing and marketable percentages are independent planning adjustments and are entered as percentages.

What the result means

The result is the estimated marketable fruit weight after applying both bearing-tree and marketable-yield percentages to gross tree-level production.

This is a planning model. Crop load, fruit size, weather, pests, thinning, alternate bearing, and harvest losses can move actual yield away from the forecast.

What does “equivalent bearing trees” mean?

It is a forecasting value equal to total trees multiplied by the bearing percentage. It can be fractional because it represents expected production capacity rather than a literal tree count.

Should young or missing trees be included?

Include them in total planting density only if the bearing-rate assumption properly adjusts for their lower or zero production. Otherwise, use a density representing the productive tree population.

How should I choose the marketable yield rate?

Base it on your expected packout or usable-harvest share for the same crop and quality standard. Conditions that raise culls or field losses should reduce the rate.

Can the forecast be used before fruit set?

Yes, but uncertainty will be higher. Early-season estimates should generally use wider scenario ranges and be updated as fruit set and crop load become observable.

Why forecast by tree instead of yield per acre?

Tree-level forecasting is useful when planting density and bearing status matter. If reliable per-acre yield history is available, a direct acreage-times-yield method may be simpler.
