Puppies, kittens, senior animals, medical cases, species other than dogs and cats, and animals requiring behavioral support can need very different resources. For that reason, the calculator should be used as a staffing and inventory worksheet, not as a source of nutrition, hydration, or medical guidance.

Are the default food and water values recommendations?

No. They are sample planning inputs only. Replace them with values from your organization’s feeding, veterinary, sanitation, and facility protocols.

Should foster animals be included?

Include them only if the resources being modeled are supplied or performed by the adoption organization. Otherwise model on-site and foster populations separately.

How do I account for medical or neonatal animals?

Use a separate scenario with higher organization-approved staff-time and resource assumptions. A single average can understate workload when a small group needs intensive care.

Why are cleaning loads expressed per 10 animals?

It provides a simple operational scaling factor for laundry, bedding, dish, or sanitation cycles. Define “load” consistently with the process you actually track.

Can this result determine minimum staffing?

It estimates care hours, but it does not set legal, accreditation, safety, or supervision requirements. Staffing decisions should also account for shift coverage, skills, facility design, intake, adoption counseling, and emergencies.
