The staffing calculation is a workload planning ratio only. It does not account for shift length, overnight coverage, breaks, supervisory roles, species separation, or jurisdiction-specific rules.

What the result means

The main result is the smallest whole number of staff positions needed to meet the planning ratio you entered for the stated pet count.

Validate staffing plans against facility policies, animal-care needs, occupancy patterns, and applicable local requirements.

These are baseline quantities under the entered ratios, not a substitute for shift-level staffing analysis.

Why does staffing round up?

If the ratio produces a fraction, rounding down would exceed the entered pets-per-staff limit. The calculator therefore rounds to the next whole position.

Should I use peak occupancy or average occupancy?

Use peak occupancy for a conservative peak-day plan and average occupancy for routine purchasing. You may want to calculate both.

Does one staff position mean one employee for the whole day?

No. It represents concurrent positions under the simple ratio. Converting positions into paid labor hours requires shift lengths, opening hours, breaks, and scheduling assumptions.

Can cats and dogs use the same staffing ratio?

They may require different handling, housing, and care workflows. If your facility plans them differently, calculate groups separately.

Are the meal and cleaning outputs purchase quantities?

They are daily usage estimates. Add a reasonable buffer and account for package sizes, waste, laundry, sanitation procedures, and inventory already on hand when purchasing.
