Utilization = share of staffed time available for grooming appointments
Average appointment hours = average appointment minutes ÷ 60

Assumptions: Every groomer is modeled with the same hours and productivity, and service duration is represented by one average. Fractional appointments are rounded down.

What the result means

The result is the number of complete average appointments that fit into the modeled service hours.

Operational bottlenecks such as tubs, dryers, tables, kennel space, or check-in capacity can reduce throughput even when groomer-hours are available.

Calculation
Service hours = 4 × 8 × 0.80 = 25.6 h. Appointment time = 90 ÷ 60 = 1.5 h. Capacity = floor(25.6 ÷ 1.5) = 17 appointments/day. Weekly = 17 × 6 = 102.

The unused 20% of staffed time provides room for activities outside direct grooming service.

Why include a utilization percentage?

Not every paid minute can be booked as grooming time. Utilization creates an explicit allowance for intake, cleaning, breaks, equipment tasks, and normal scheduling gaps.

Should I use booked duration or hands-on grooming time?

Use the time that actually constrains your appointment calendar. If drying or turnover occupies a groomer or critical workstation, your duration should reflect that effect.

Can equipment limit capacity before labor does?

Yes. Tubs, dryers, tables, cages, parking, or mobile-unit constraints may become the true bottleneck. This calculator models labor-time capacity only.

How do cancellations affect the estimate?

The result measures theoretical service capacity from available time, not realized completed appointments. If you are forecasting revenue, apply your expected completion or no-show rate separately.
