It multiplies the number of inventory tasks by average area-occupancy minutes, then compares that workload with the total hours available across the number of work areas entered. The result can help identify whether physical workspace is likely to constrain receiving, counting, stocking, staging, or other inventory operations.

Because pharmacy layouts vary widely, “room” in this calculator means a work area that is treated as a discrete capacity unit for planning. The model does not assume that every pharmacy has a separate inventory room, and it does not represent cleanroom, hazardous-drug, or other specialized environmental requirements. If different spaces are not interchangeable, calculate them separately. The utilization percentage is an operational time ratio, not a regulatory occupancy limit or recommended target.

What counts as a room for this calculator?

Use any discrete pharmacy work area that acts as a capacity unit for the inventory process you are evaluating. It could be a room, receiving station, staging area, or another comparable space.

Can I combine specialized and general pharmacy spaces?

Only if they are genuinely interchangeable for the tasks being modeled. Specialized environments with distinct requirements should be calculated separately.

Should cleaning or reset time be included?

Include it in area minutes per task when it prevents the next task from using the space. Excluding required turnaround time can understate utilization.

Why might utilization be low while staff still feel overloaded?

Space is only one resource. Labor, verification, equipment, delivery timing, information systems, or task batching can be the true bottleneck even when area-hours are available.

Is 100% utilization an appropriate operating target?

The calculator does not recommend a target. Near-100% nominal utilization leaves little room for variability, but the right operating level depends on your workflow and constraints.
