What the result means

Utilization shows the share of stated treatment-space capacity that is occupied. It is a scheduling indicator, not a target that every clinic should maximize.

Cleaning, setup, accessibility needs, equipment constraints, shared spaces, and intentional buffer time can make practical capacity lower than the simple room-hour total.

The rooms are busy for four-fifths of stated capacity, but the unused time may not be fully schedulable because it can be fragmented across days and rooms.

What counts as an occupied room-hour?

Count time when the selected room or treatment space is unavailable for another visit because it is being used for the activity you are measuring.

Can utilization be above 100%?

Yes, mathematically, but it usually means occupied hours include overtime, overlapping/shared-space activity, or capacity hours were understated. Review the definitions before treating it as a true utilization rate.

Should open gym space be counted as a room?

Only if you can define it as a consistent capacity unit. If several patients can use the gym simultaneously, model those usable stations or spaces rather than treating the entire gym as one room.

Is higher room utilization always better?

No. Very high utilization can leave little buffer for delays, cleaning, equipment turnover, or schedule variation. The useful range depends on how the clinic operates.

Why does the calculator estimate extra visits from unused time?

It converts unused room-hours into an intuitive visit equivalent using average room occupancy time. It does not guarantee those visits can be scheduled because staffing and time-slot fragmentation may limit access.
