Podcast Subscription Audience Conversion Calculator

This calculator measures the share of a podcast audience that becomes paid subscribers. It also converts a target subscription rate into a subscriber count, making audience-growth and monetization goals easier to connect. Select an audience base that reflects reachable listeners during the same period as the paid subscriber count. Monthly unique listeners or engaged listeners are usually more useful for operational comparisons than cumulative downloads, which may count repeat activity and older episodes.

Use active paid podcast subscribers measured for the same period.

3. Set the target rate
Enter a target percentage for planning future subscriber volume.

4. Review current conversion
The main result shows paid subscribers as a percentage of the selected audience.

5. Check the gap
Use target subscribers and the gap to translate the target rate into an absolute goal.

Audience conversion rate = Paid subscribers ÷ Eligible podcast audience × 100% Subscribers at target = Eligible audience × Target rate Listeners per subscriber = Eligible audience ÷ Paid subscribers

Where:

  • Eligible audience: defined listener base that can reasonably encounter the subscription offer
  • Paid subscribers: active paying podcast subscribers
  • Target rate: desired percentage of the audience that subscribes

Assumptions: Listener and paid subscriber counts are aligned to the same period and use non-overlapping person-level definitions where possible.

What the result means

The main percentage indicates how many paid subscribers the podcast has for every 100 eligible listeners.

Downloads are not always unique listeners. A denominator inflated by repeat downloads can understate conversion.

Given: 40,000 eligible listeners, 480 paid subscribers, and a 1.5% target rate.

Calculation: Current conversion = 480 ÷ 40,000 × 100 = 1.20%. Subscribers at target = 40,000 × 1.5% = 600. Gap = 600 − 480 = 120. Listeners per subscriber = 40,000 ÷ 480 = 83.33.

Result: Current paid conversion is 1.20%, and 120 additional subscribers would reach the target.

Can I use total episode downloads as the audience?

You can, but downloads may include repeat listening and multiple episodes per person. A unique listener or qualified audience measure usually gives a cleaner conversion rate.

Should free-trial subscribers be included?

Include them only when the metric is intentionally trial-inclusive. For paid conversion, use subscribers who have entered a paid billing state.

Why calculate listeners per subscriber?

It provides an intuitive inverse view of conversion. For example, 100 listeners per subscriber corresponds to a 1% conversion rate.

How should annual subscribers be compared with monthly listeners?

Align both measures to the same period. Mixing annual subscriber totals with one month of listeners can distort the rate.

How is this different from landing-page conversion?

Audience conversion uses the broader listener base as the denominator. Landing-page conversion uses only people who visited the subscription page.
