Poultry Flock Nutrient Rate Estimator

The Poultry Flock Nutrient Rate Estimator converts flock feed intake and a nutrient percentage into the total amount of that nutrient supplied over a selected number of days. Daily feed is entered per bird in grams, while the nutrient concentration is entered as a percentage of the same feed basis used for the ration specification.

This tool is useful for feed inventory and formulation scenario checks when you want to translate a percentage into a physical nutrient quantity for the whole flock. It can be used with a selected feed component such as crude protein when the concentration is expressed consistently. The calculator does not set a recommended nutrient percentage or determine whether the ration meets requirements for a particular species, strain, age, growth target, or environmental condition. Those decisions require the appropriate feeding standards and ration context.

Total feed (kg) = Birds × Feed per bird per day (g) ÷ 1,000 × Days Selected nutrient (kg) = Total feed × Nutrient percentage ÷ 100

Where:

  • Birds = flock count receiving feed.
  • Feed per bird per day = average daily feed intake, in g/bird/day.
  • Nutrient percentage = selected nutrient as a percent of the entered feed basis.
  • Days = length of the feeding period.

Assumptions: The model assumes a constant flock count, average feed intake, and nutrient percentage. It calculates supplied mass only and does not model digestibility, nutrient availability, feed wastage, or animal requirements.

What the result means

The result is the total mass of the selected nutrient represented by the entered flock feed scenario, not a recommended feeding level.

Keep the feed-intake and nutrient-concentration basis consistent, and use phase-specific runs when the ration changes.

Given: 18,000 birds, 112 g feed per bird per day, 20.5% selected nutrient, for 10 days.

Calculation:
Total feed = 18,000 × 112 ÷ 1,000 × 10 = 20,160 kg
Selected nutrient = 20,160 × 0.205 = 4,132.8 kg

Result: 4,132.80 kg of the selected nutrient over 10 days.

That is 413.28 kg per day across the flock, based entirely on the entered feed intake and concentration.

Can I use this for a nutrient listed in grams per kilogram instead of percent?

Convert the concentration to a percentage before entering it. For example, 10 g/kg equals 1% by mass.

Should the feed input be offered feed or consumed feed?

Use consumed feed when you want the nutrient amount actually represented by intake. Offered feed can overstate intake when refusals or wastage are material.

Does the tool account for changing feed intake as birds grow?

No. A single run uses one average daily intake. Divide the cycle into age phases when feed intake or ration concentration changes materially.

Does the calculated nutrient amount show that the diet is adequate?

No. It shows the mass implied by the feed and percentage inputs. Adequacy requires comparison with appropriate nutrient requirements and the complete diet.

Can I compare two rations with this calculator?

Yes. Run each ration using its own feed intake and nutrient percentage over the same flock and period, then compare the resulting quantities while keeping the basis consistent.
