The Poultry Flock Feed Conversion Calculator measures feed conversion ratio (FCR) from total feed consumed and the flock’s net live-weight gain over the same period. FCR expresses how many units of feed were used for each unit of live-weight gain; when feed and weight are entered in the same mass unit, the ratio itself has no unit.

This flock-level calculation is useful for comparing production cycles, houses, diets, or management periods when the underlying measurement boundaries are consistent. Starting and ending live weight should represent comparable flock populations, and feed consumed should cover that same interval. Mortality, feed wastage, inventory corrections, and partial-flock sales can distort a simple FCR if they are not handled consistently in the source records. The calculator reports the arithmetic ratio but does not judge what FCR should be for a particular bird type, age, market weight, or production system.

1. Enter feed consumed
Use feed actually consumed during the measurement interval, in kilograms.

Net live-weight gain = Ending flock live weight − Starting flock live weight FCR = Feed consumed ÷ Net live-weight gain

Where:

  • Feed consumed = mass of feed used during the interval, in kg.
  • Starting flock live weight = total comparable live weight at the beginning, in kg.
  • Ending flock live weight = total comparable live weight at the end, in kg.
  • FCR = kg feed per kg of net live-weight gain when both inputs use kg.

Assumptions: This simple FCR uses net flock live-weight gain. It does not automatically adjust feed or weight for mortality, culls, transfers, carcass yield, or feed remaining in bins.

What the result means

A smaller FCR means less feed was recorded per unit of net live-weight gain under the chosen accounting method; it does not capture all biological or economic performance factors.

For flock comparisons, keep feed accounting, weigh dates, bird population treatment, and mass units consistent.

Given: 24,000 kg of feed, 5,200 kg starting flock live weight, and 18,500 kg ending flock live weight.

Calculation:
Net live-weight gain = 18,500 − 5,200 = 13,300 kg
FCR = 24,000 ÷ 13,300 = 1.8045

Result: FCR ≈ 1.805.

Under these measurement boundaries, the flock used about 1.805 kg of feed for each kilogram of net live-weight gain.

Is a lower FCR always better?

For otherwise comparable production, a lower feed-per-gain ratio generally means less feed was used per unit of measured live-weight gain. However, comparisons should also consider mortality, market weight, diet, bird genetics, health, and measurement consistency.

Can I use pounds instead of kilograms?

Yes, if feed, starting weight, and ending weight all use pounds. Because the same mass unit appears in the numerator and denominator, the numerical FCR is unchanged.

How should mortality be handled?

A simple beginning-to-ending flock weight can be biased when birds are removed during the period. For formal performance analysis, use your operation’s established mortality-adjusted method and keep the accounting treatment consistent between flocks.

What happens if ending weight is not greater than starting weight?

The calculator will not report FCR because net live-weight gain would be zero or negative, making a feed-per-gain ratio unsuitable for this model.

Is FCR the same as feed cost per kilogram of gain?

No. FCR measures physical feed use per unit of gain. Feed cost per unit of gain also depends on the price of the feed consumed.
