Remote Work Priority Calculator

Rank remote work tasks with a weighted priority score based on impact, urgency, effort, and dependency risk. The calculator rewards high-impact and urgent work, gives extra weight to tasks that block others, and reduces the score as effort increases.

Use the result to compare tasks under one consistent scoring model when a simple to-do list is not enough. The score is relative: it becomes most useful when the same weights and rating scale are applied to several tasks.

1. Rate task impact
Score the expected value of completing the task from 1 to 10.

2. Rate urgency
Use a higher score when delay creates a meaningful cost or missed deadline.

3. Estimate effort
Score the relative time and difficulty required; higher effort lowers the final score.

4. Assess dependency risk
Rate how strongly other people or tasks are blocked by this work.

5. Set emphasis and compare
Adjust impact and urgency weights, then use the same settings across all candidate tasks.

Weighted benefit = Impact × Impact weight + Urgency × Urgency weight Remaining weight = 100% − Impact weight − Urgency weight Dependency boost = Dependency rating × Remaining weight Priority score = (Weighted benefit + Dependency boost) ÷ Effort rating

Weights are converted to decimals and must total no more than 100%. The score has no universal maximum; compare tasks using the same settings.

What the result means

A higher score indicates more expected value and time sensitivity per unit of effort under the chosen weights.

The model supports prioritization but does not replace judgment about strategic commitments or mandatory work.

Given: Impact 8, urgency 7, effort 4, dependency risk 6, impact weight 40%, and urgency weight 35%.

Calculation: Remaining dependency weight = 25%. Weighted benefit = 8 × 0.40 + 7 × 0.35 = 5.65. Dependency boost = 6 × 0.25 = 1.50. Priority score = (5.65 + 1.50) ÷ 4 = 1.7875.

Result: The priority score is 1.79.

Interpretation: Compare 1.79 with other tasks scored using the same scale and weights.

What score counts as high priority?

There is no universal cutoff. Score the competing tasks and rank them from highest to lowest under the same assumptions.

Why does effort divide the score?

Dividing by effort favors tasks that deliver more impact, urgency, and dependency relief for each unit of work.

What if impact and urgency weights total 100%?

Then dependency risk receives zero weight. The calculation remains valid, but dependency will not affect the ranking.

Can I use hours instead of a 1-to-10 effort rating?

Not with this model. Use a consistent 1-to-10 relative rating so one very large hour estimate does not dominate the scale.

How often should I rescore tasks?

Rescore when deadlines, dependencies, scope, or business impact changes. Static scores become less useful as conditions shift.
