Rental Car Cost Estimator

The Rental Car Cost Estimator calculates the expected cost of a rental using daily charges, rental length, taxes, insurance or protection products, mileage charges, fuel, and fixed fees. It is useful for comparing quotes that advertise a low base rate but differ significantly after add-ons.

The result separates the base rental charge from variable and fixed additions, and it also reports an effective cost per day. This helps you compare offers on a consistent total-cost basis. The estimate does not replace the rental agreement, especially where taxes, deposits, one-way charges, or mileage rules vary.

Base charge = Daily rate × Rental days
Estimated tax = Base charge × Tax rate ÷ 100
Variable additions = Daily protection × Days + Chargeable miles × Mileage rate
Total = Base charge + Tax + Variable additions + Fuel + Fixed fees

What the result means

The main result is the estimated all-in rental cost using the entered assumptions.

The tax rate is applied only to the base charge in this model. Rental companies may tax additional items differently.

Given: $52 per day for six days, 14% tax, $18 daily protection, 150 chargeable miles at $0.25, $90 fuel, and $65 fixed fees.

Calculation: Base = $52 × 6 = $312. Tax = $43.68. Protection = $108. Mileage = $37.50. Total = $312 + $43.68 + $108 + $37.50 + $90 + $65 = $656.18.

Result: Estimated rental cost is $656.18, or $109.36 per day.

What counts as a fixed fee?

Examples include airport concession charges, one-way fees, facility fees, or an additional-driver fee quoted as one amount.

Should I enter unlimited mileage as zero?

Yes. Set chargeable miles or the mileage rate to zero when the rental includes unlimited mileage.

Does the estimator include a refundable deposit?

No. A deposit affects temporary cash or credit availability but is not normally a final cost unless part is retained.

How do I compare rental quotes fairly?

Use the same rental length, mileage, protection assumptions, fuel plan, and taxes for each quote. Compare the estimated total and effective daily cost.

Why can the counter price differ?

Taxes may apply to more items, optional products may change, and the company may add location-specific or age-related surcharges.
