Robot Fleet Coverage Area Calculator

The Robot Fleet Coverage Area Calculator estimates the total floor area a robot fleet can service during an operating period. It combines the number of robots, productive operating hours, and an average area-service rate per robot, then applies utilization so scheduled time is not automatically treated as fully productive time.

It can support planning for cleaning robots, inspection platforms, mapping systems, and other mobile robots whose work is naturally measured in square meters or square feet. The result is most useful for checking whether a fleet has enough nominal area capacity for a site and for comparing the effects of different speeds, schedules, or utilization assumptions.

1. Enter fleet size
Use the number of robots assigned to the area during the selected period.

2. Set operating hours
Enter scheduled hours per robot for that same period.

Use a realistic average service rate in square meters per hour for one robot under similar conditions.

4. Adjust utilization
Reduce scheduled time for charging, travel without service, refills, waiting, maintenance, and other nonproductive time.

5. Compare with site area
Use estimated coverage against the actual serviceable area, not necessarily the building gross area.

Theoretical coverage = Robots × Operating hours × Area rate Estimated coverage = Theoretical coverage × Utilization ÷ 100

  • Operating hours — scheduled hours per robot
  • Area rate — average serviceable area per robot-hour
  • Utilization — productive share of scheduled time

Assumptions: The area rate is treated as an average and robots are assumed to operate independently. Rework, overlap, inaccessible zones, route geometry, and traffic are not modeled separately.

What the result means

The fleet has an estimated productive area capacity of 42,000 square meters over the selected period.

Coverage represents serviceable area capacity, not unique mapped floor area.

Given:

  • 8 robots
  • 10 hours per robot
  • 700 m²/hour area rate
  • 75% productive utilization

Calculation:
Theoretical coverage = 8 × 10 × 700 = 56,000 m²
Estimated coverage = 56,000 × 0.75 = 42,000 m²

Result:
42,000 m²

Interpretation:
The fleet has an estimated productive area capacity of 42,000 square meters over the selected period.

Should I enter gross floor area as the target?

Usually not. Use the area the robots actually need and are able to service after excluding fixed obstacles, restricted zones, and spaces outside the workflow.

How do I estimate the area service rate?

Prefer measured production data from a similar site or a vendor rate adjusted for your operating conditions. A brochure maximum can materially overstate real coverage if turns, obstacles, or stops are frequent.

Does the calculator account for overlapping robot paths?

No. Overlap should be reflected in a lower effective area rate or utilization value, depending on how your operational data are measured.

Can I use square feet instead of square meters?

Yes, if you keep the area rate and final area in the same unit system. The interface labels square meters, so convert your rate to m²/hour before entering it for a correctly labeled result.

What if the fleet must cover the same area multiple times?

Treat each required pass as additional service demand. For example, two full passes over 10,000 m² require 20,000 m² of area capacity.
