Study GPA Calculator

The Study GPA Calculator estimates a weighted grade point average from completed credits and planned study credits. It helps students model how a new course result could affect a cumulative or term GPA before the grade is posted.

Provide the GPA and credit total already earned, then add the credits and expected grade points for the planned course or study period. The calculator returns the projected GPA, total quality points, and the change from the starting GPA. Because schools may use different grading scales and repeat-course rules, enter grade points that match the policy used by your institution.

GPA change

1. Match the GPA scale
Enter a current GPA and expected grade points on the same 4.0 scale.

2. Enter completed credits
Use credits included in the GPA calculation, excluding pass/fail work when your school excludes it.

3. Add the planned course
Enter its credit value and expected grade-point value.

4. Read the projected GPA
Review the new weighted GPA and the amount it changes from the starting value.

Projected GPA = [(Current GPA × Completed credits) + (Expected grade points × New credits)] ÷ (Completed credits + New credits)

GPA is weighted by credits. Current quality points equal current GPA times completed credits, while new quality points equal expected grade points times new credits. The model uses a 4.0 scale and does not automatically apply institutional rules for repeated courses, withdrawals, or plus/minus grades.

What the result means

The result is the combined GPA after adding the planned credits at the expected grade-point value.

Use the official grade-point conversion and credit inclusion rules from your school for an institutional estimate.

Given: Current GPA 3.25 over 45 credits; a 3-credit course is expected to earn 3.70 grade points.

Calculation:
Current quality points = 3.25 × 45 = 146.25
New quality points = 3.70 × 3 = 11.10
Projected GPA = (146.25 + 11.10) ÷ 48 = 3.277

Result: The projected GPA is 3.277, an increase of about 0.027.

Can I use a 5.0 GPA scale?

This implementation is designed for a 4.0 scale. Convert all values to a consistent scale before using it.

Should pass/fail credits be included?

Include them only if your institution counts them in GPA quality points. Many schools count the credits toward graduation but exclude them from GPA.

How do repeated courses affect the estimate?

The calculator simply adds the new course. If your school replaces or averages the previous attempt, the official result can differ.

Why does one course change my GPA so little?

When many credits are already completed, the new course represents only a small share of the total weighted average.

Can I calculate several future courses?

Combine courses by adding their credits and using their credit-weighted average grade points, or test them one at a time.
