The Swimming Pace Recovery Needs Estimator converts a pace-based training load and session RPE into a practical recovery-time estimate. It is aimed at swimmers who want a repeatable planning signal after threshold sets, long aerobic sessions, race-pace work, or mixed workouts. The calculation first compares average pace with a benchmark pace, combines that intensity with session duration, and then applies a modest perceived-effort adjustment.
The main result is a suggested number of hours before another demanding swim. This is not a medical recommendation and it does not model every source of fatigue. Shoulder soreness, strength training, travel, sleep, fueling, illness, water temperature, and cumulative training can matter as much as pace. Use the estimate as one input to planning, then modify it based on how you recover and how your next warm-up feels.

What the result means
More hours indicate a session that combined longer duration, faster relative pace, or higher perceived exertion and may warrant more time before another hard swim.
Persistent pain, unusual fatigue, or health concerns should not be managed by a calculator alone.
Given: Duration = 80 min; average pace = 1:46/100 m; benchmark = 1:42/100 m; RPE = 8.
Interpretation: The workout is moderately long, close to benchmark pace, and rated hard, so the estimator suggests roughly a day and a third before another demanding swim.
Does this account for shoulder or joint soreness?
No. The formula uses pace, duration, and RPE only. Local soreness or pain should be evaluated separately and can justify more recovery.
What if I do another easy swim sooner?
The estimate is intended for the next demanding session, not necessarily complete rest. Easy technique or recovery work may fit sooner depending on the swimmer.
Can I use a CSS pace as the benchmark?
Yes. Critical swim speed pace is a reasonable benchmark if it is current and used consistently.
Why include RPE when pace is already measured?
Perceived exertion can capture stress from heat, poor sleep, accumulated fatigue, or difficult conditions that pace alone misses.
Is the 72-hour maximum a hard limit?
No. It only caps the calculator display. Real recovery can take longer after unusually hard training, illness, travel, or injury.
