Utility Time Estimator

The Utility Time Estimator converts a utility task into an estimated completion time based on the number of items, time per item, setup time, and number of people working in parallel. It can be used for meter checks, fixture inspections, filter replacements, account reviews, or other repeatable household utility tasks.

The estimate helps schedule the work and compare the benefit of adding help. It assumes each worker can perform tasks at roughly the same pace and that the workload can be divided evenly.

1. Count the repeatable work
Enter how many meters, rooms, fixtures, accounts, or other units must be handled.

2. Estimate time per unit
Use an observed average when possible rather than a best-case guess.

3. Add fixed time
Include setup, travel within the property, preparation, and cleanup that are not repeated per item.

4. Enter the crew size
Use the number of people who can perform the work at the same time.

5. Add a buffer separately
Consider extra time for access problems, repairs, or interruptions after reviewing the base estimate.

The model assumes parallel work and no loss of efficiency from coordination.

What the result means

The main result is the estimated clock time from start to finish for the entered crew size.

Actual duration can be longer when tasks vary greatly, workers share equipment, or access is restricted.

Given: 30 fixtures, 5 minutes per fixture, 15 minutes of setup, and 3 workers.

Calculation: Task labor = 30 × 5 = 150 minutes. Elapsed time = 15 + (150 ÷ 3) = 65 minutes. One-person time = 15 + 150 = 165 minutes, so estimated time saved is 100 minutes.

Result: The task is expected to take about 65 minutes with three people.

Should setup time be divided by the number of workers?

No. The calculator treats setup and cleanup as fixed elapsed time. Enter only the portion that does not shrink when more people help.

What if workers have different speeds?

Use an effective worker count or calculate separate groups. The simple model assumes similar productivity.

Can this estimate a repair job?

It works best for repeatable tasks. A repair with uncertain diagnosis or parts delays needs an additional contingency.

Why is total labor time different from elapsed time?

Labor time adds all person-minutes, while elapsed time measures how long the group takes when work occurs in parallel.

Can the result be used for contractor pricing?

It can support a rough labor estimate, but pricing may also include travel, minimum charges, overhead, materials, and specialist rates.
