Walking Calories Calculator

The Walking Calories Calculator estimates energy expenditure from body weight, walking duration, and pace. It uses metabolic equivalent (MET) values to distinguish an easy walk from brisk or very fast walking.

Calorie burn is always an estimate because terrain, incline, biomechanics, fitness, and measurement error affect actual energy use. The calculator is most useful for comparing routes or planning activity consistently.

1. Enter body weight
Use current weight in kilograms.

2. Add walking time
Enter active walking minutes.

3. Choose pace
Select the description closest to your typical speed.

4. Review calories
The main result estimates gross activity energy.

5. Compare scenarios
Change time or pace to compare routes and sessions.

Calories = MET × 3.5 × body weight (kg) ÷ 200 × minutes.

MET is the selected metabolic-equivalent value for the walking pace.

What the result means

The result approximates total energy used during the selected walking period.

Inclines, loads, surfaces, and individual efficiency can move actual expenditure above or below the estimate.

Given: 70 kg, 45 minutes, moderate pace at 3.5 MET.

Calculation: 3.5 × 3.5 × 70 ÷ 200 × 45 = 192.94 kcal.

Result: About 193 kcal.

Are these active calories or total calories?

The MET equation estimates gross energy expenditure during the walk. Devices may report active calories after subtracting resting energy.

How should hills be handled?

Choose a faster category as a rough proxy, or use a tool that explicitly includes grade.

Does carrying a backpack matter?

Yes. Added load can increase energy cost, but this calculator does not model it directly.

Why does my watch show a different number?

Wearables may use heart rate, speed, personal history, and proprietary algorithms.

Can I use miles instead of pace labels?

This version uses pace categories to keep the estimate simple; select the category that best matches your usual speed.
