Warehouse Slotting Transit Duration Estimator

The Warehouse Slotting Transit Duration Estimator adds the major time components that move an item from the start of a slotting task to its completed storage position. It is intended for internal warehouse flow analysis, not carrier transit. Typical inputs include queue time before work starts, travel time, placement or putaway time, verification time, and other delays that occur during the process.

Operations teams can use the estimate to establish a baseline cycle time, compare alternative layouts, or identify which part of the slotting path contributes most to elapsed duration. Because some delays happen concurrently in real operations, only enter components that should be added sequentially for the process being modeled. If the workflow contains parallel activities, model the critical path rather than summing overlapping time.

All inputs are minutes per modeled slotting task or flow. Add only non-overlapping time components. When activities overlap, use the elapsed time of the critical path instead of counting both durations.

What the result means

The result is the estimated elapsed time for the defined slotting flow from the chosen start point to completion.

It measures internal process duration; it does not estimate freight carrier or supplier transportation time.

12 minutes of queue time, 6.5 minutes of travel, 4 minutes of putaway, 2 minutes of verification, and 1.5 minutes of other sequential delay.

Active handling = 6.5 + 4 + 2 = 12.5 minutes.

Interpretation
In this example, 13.5 minutes are delay-related and 12.5 minutes are active handling, which helps separate waiting from physical work.

Is this the same as dock-to-stock time?

It can model part or all of dock-to-stock only if your chosen endpoints cover that full process. Define the start and finish consistently before comparing results.

Should replenishment travel be included?

Include it only if replenishment travel is part of the slotting cycle you are timing. Keep unrelated movement out of the model.

What if two activities happen at the same time?

Do not simply add overlapping durations. Model the elapsed critical path so the same minutes are not counted twice.

Can I use averages from a time study?

Yes. Recent observed averages or medians can provide useful inputs, especially when they match the same product mix and layout being analyzed.

Why separate active time from delays?

The split helps show whether the cycle is dominated by handling work or by waiting. That distinction can guide different improvement actions.
