Weekly Time Estimator

The Weekly Time Estimator accounts for the full 168 hours in a seven-day week and shows how much time remains after major recurring commitments. Enter sleep, paid work or study, commuting, household and care duties, exercise, and other fixed activities. The calculator totals those blocks, reports their share of the week, and identifies unallocated time.

This view is useful when a weekly plan feels crowded but the source of the pressure is unclear. It separates the total time that is theoretically open from the time that is truly discretionary, because meals, errands, transitions, and recovery may still need to come from the remainder. A negative result means the entered commitments are internally inconsistent and exceed 168 hours. Review the largest categories first and confirm that daily values were converted to weekly totals correctly.

1. Enter weekly sleep
Multiply your typical nightly sleep by seven if the value is stable.

2. Add work or study
Include paid work, classes, and scheduled study time.

3. Include travel and care
Count recurring commuting, household work, childcare, and caregiving.

4. Add exercise and other fixed blocks
Capture regular commitments that compete for the same weekly hours.

5. Inspect unallocated time
Treat the remainder as a planning pool, not automatically as leisure.

Unallocated weekly time = 168 − (Sleep + Work/study + Commute + Care + Exercise + Other fixed time)

The model assumes a seven-day week of 24 hours per day. Average daily unallocated time equals the weekly remainder divided by 7.

What the result means

The result is the number of weekly hours not assigned to the listed recurring categories.

Meals, errands, and transitions must be entered explicitly if you want them removed from the remainder.

Given: 56 hours sleep, 40 work, 5 commute, 14 care, 4 exercise, and 14 other fixed hours.

Calculation: Committed = 56 + 40 + 5 + 14 + 4 + 14 = 133 hours. Unallocated = 168 − 133 = 35 hours, or 5 hours per day on average.

Result: 35 weekly hours remain before any omitted activities are considered.

Why does the calculator start with 168 hours?

Seven days multiplied by 24 hours equals 168 total hours in a week.

Should work breaks be included in work time?

Include them if they are part of the time you must remain at work or school.

What does a negative remainder indicate?

At least one input is overstated, duplicated, or converted incorrectly because the commitments exceed the available week.

Is unallocated time the same as free time?

Not necessarily. It may still need to cover meals, personal care, errands, and unexpected demands.

How can I compare different weeks?

Use the same categories and compare both total remainder and the categories that changed.
