Aquarium Daily Requirements Estimator

The Aquarium Daily Requirements Estimator converts a few routine aquarium-care assumptions into daily quantities that are easier to plan. It uses tank volume with a user-entered feeding rate per 10 gallons and a weekly water-change percentage to estimate daily feed, weekly replacement water, and the weekly water amount expressed as a daily average. The calculator does not choose feeding or water-change targets for a particular species or system.

It is most useful for inventory and maintenance planning when you already have husbandry targets from your own care plan. For example, you can estimate how much feed to keep on hand for several days or translate a weekly water-change target into the average volume of replacement water consumed per day. Actual needs can vary with stocking, species, filtration, temperature, water chemistry, plant load, and feeding strategy.

1. Enter tank volume
Use the working water volume you want represented in the plan. If décor or substrate significantly reduces actual water volume, use your best working-volume estimate.

2. Set your feeding rate
Enter the amount of feed per 10 gallons per day from your established husbandry plan.

3. Enter weekly water-change percentage
Use the percentage of the tank volume you intend to replace in a typical week.

4. Choose a planning period
Enter the number of days for which you want cumulative feed and average replacement-water totals.

5. Review daily and period needs
Use the daily feed estimate for routine preparation and the period totals for stocking supplies or water planning.

The water figure is a planning average. A weekly change is normally performed in one or more maintenance events rather than literally replacing one-seventh of the weekly volume every day.

What the result means

The main result estimates the daily feed quantity implied by the rate you entered and the selected tank volume.

The calculator applies your chosen husbandry targets; it does not determine safe feeding rates or water-change percentages for fish, invertebrates, plants, or a specific aquarium.

Given: 50 gallons, 1.2 g of feed per 10 gallons per day, a 25% weekly water change, and a 30-day planning period.

Calculation: Daily feed = (50 ÷ 10) × 1.2 = 6 g. Weekly water = 50 × 0.25 = 12.5 gal. Daily-average water = 12.5 ÷ 7 = 1.79 gal. Period feed = 6 × 30 = 180 g.

Result: The plan implies 6 g of feed per day, with 12.5 gallons of replacement water per week.

Does the calculator recommend how much I should feed?

No. The feeding rate is an input that you supply from your own husbandry plan. Appropriate feeding depends on the species, biomass, food type, temperature, behavior, and water quality.

Why is water replacement shown as a daily average?

It makes supply planning easier across a multi-day period. You can still perform the actual water change on the schedule that fits your aquarium rather than replacing that average amount each day.

Should I use nominal tank size or actual water volume?

Use working water volume when you can estimate it. Substrate, rock, décor, and incomplete filling can make actual water volume lower than the tank’s nominal capacity.

Can I set the weekly water-change percentage to zero?

Yes, the calculator allows it. That only means the modeled replacement-water requirement is zero; it is not a recommendation that zero water changes are appropriate.

What does the planning-day input affect?

It scales cumulative feed and average replacement-water totals. It does not change the daily feed or weekly water-change calculation.
